PRInCE Per Pound!!

So with less than a month left for pitchers and catchers to report to spring training Damon, Ibáñez, and Matsui remain free agents. However, there is some good news for one player at least, Prince finally has a home and it’s with the Tigers. Yes, you read that correctly Prince is a Tiger; not Prince ate a tiger! That’s not the shocking part by any means. What should come as a surprise is the salary Prince obtained from the Detroit Tigers 9-years for 214 million. I know what you are thinking, was he paid by the pound? No, he was paid panic (Victor Martinez is hurt oh my Lord) money. It appears that the Tigers “powers that be” must have spent their winter with Brian Cashman of the New York Yankees or better yet the Tigers “powers that be” should have spent their winter Googl-ing the Alex Rodriguez contract either way the “powers that be” thoughtless decision simply shows it was money wasted. 214 million is just the sticker price but only if Prince was a luxury SUV that included an inexpensive full coverage car insurance rate along with a 9 year maintenance plan. No from this writer/fan perspective this player comes with negative side effects! For example, which Detroit tiger is now trade bait cabrera, Martinez or Inge? What happens in 2014 when Verlander becomes a free agent? Lastly why did a team that finished 15 games ahead of Cleveland, 16 ahead of the white sox , 24 ahead of the Royals and lastly 32 games ahead of The Twins in a division that’s basically weaker than a wet piece of one ply toilet paper go and spent 214 million on one overpriced overweight player ?Here is what 14 to 20 million could have bought Detroit; Raúl Ibáñez, Johnny Damon, and Hideki Matsui and with just enough left over change to ink Edwin Jackson for a similar deal of that of Ryan Madson which mind you was a steal.( We will save that argument for another article but the keyword for Madson should be #fireboras.) Frankly this was a choice of want Rather than need but I doubt that Detroit “needs” to hear this type of information! Well folks 9 years from now we can only hope the fans from the economic down trodden City of Detroit have at the very least one thing to smile about because if not then Prince will not be remember as a hero but rather the guy who took the motor citys money and made a hero (sandwich) out of Detroit and its wonderful franchise.

this is a funny article but the sad this is the whoever wrote this article should be a MLB GM in that those are smart and affordable moves and do not hurt the club. Miguel at 3rd base is not going to work he is a little on the pudgy side and the write is right what will happen down the line when victor comes back …Great article

Thought the article was right on. For the short term, the deal makes the lineup dangerous, but over the long term it hurts the Tigers in trying to resign certain pieces (i.e. Verlander) that might be more important. As the writer mentioned, the deal puts Victor Martinez in a tough spot when he comes back next year, where Martinez or Inge can possibly be traded away.

Very funny and I am not that into sports but by looking at the guy and thanks to Google I must say I have to agree with the write. That is way too much money for one player especially a fat one!

I think the move was a good move for the short term, but in the long-term, injuries and things may wear on him and also, the lack of flexibility to get pitching will hurt too.

Good read. It’s nice hearing someone with a different point of view than the general public. You might be on to something!

As a life long, die hard Brewers fan I was sad to see Prince leave, but more than happy that the Crew was never really in it. Sure there is instant gratification upside, but as George writes, the Tigers were already good, and this could be a huge burden in year 5-9. I can see why after losing V-Mart they wanted to add some pop to their lineup…but 214 mill…probably not so much

I agree that Detroit definitly overpaid for Prince, but he is a very nice addition to their all ready good team. The Royals will be a lot better this season than they were the last, and they will keep getting better because they have loads of young talent. Fielder will pretty much ensure a division title this season, and they will be a force in the AL for years to come. Although they did definitly way overpay for him. Great post!

if nothing else, the Tigers are at least always looking to get better. They now have, by far, the superior rotation and lineup in the AL Central. If my Royals are to make a run, a very youthful group of starting pitchers are going to have to step up all at once. Doesn’t seem likely. Roy Oswalt and Edwin Jackson are available, but Royals GM Dayton Moore doesn’t seem willing to bring them in. It’s a shame, the Royals have an opportunity to put a dent in things this season, but it will likely have to wait until 2013 and beyond.
